Brief Historical Background
Pursuant to the powers vested under the Rodrigues Regional Assembly Act 2001, the RRA has set in June 2006 a private company under the name of Rodrigues Trading and Marketing Co Ltd (RTMC), wholly owned by the RRA. The aim of the RRA was to ensure the use of its limited resources efficiently and also for timely and efficient execution of its responsibility relating to the production and marketing of the agricultural products.
The objective of the RTMC is to be responsible for the marketing and exporting of Rodriguan products such as handicraft, agriculture, and sea products and any other local products;
Since its start of operations, the Company has been active in the following areas:-
- Purchasing agricultural products mainly onion, potato, garlic and red beans from local producers in time of surplus and exporting to Mauritius. The Company has also been importing agricultural products from Mauritius, in time of short supply, so as to meet demand of the local market;
- Exporting of livestock such as pigs and goats to Mauritius;
Marketing and exporting derivate agricultural products such as honey;
Selling to the producers local and imported production inputs (such as seeds and fertilizers)so as to ensure planters have quality products on time for cultivation; - Distribution of garlic
2. CONTRIBUTION OF RTMC TO THE RODRIGUAN ECONOMY AND SOCIETY
Sinceits existence the company has shown its importance by contributing to the economic and social development of the island. First, RTMC has brought along job creation, at present there are 6 persons employed in the company.
Moreover, the company is encouraging the planters to increase their production (such beans, onions and lemons), as the company has the role of finding markets to sell their products. Hence, the planters have a secured market to sell their products. It can also be added that the company acts as a link between the market and the producers. In such a case, the producers stick to their production task while RTMC is responsible for the marketing of their products.
The company has also contributed to the success of local products in the Mauritian market, through participation in different fairs and through strategic alliances with business partners in Mauritius. RTMC is acting as a tool to avoid monopoly or creation of cartel which could penalised local producers and buyers, in parallel the company operates as price regulator in the interest of the rodriguan suppliers and consumers.
RTMC has succeeding achieving a climate of trust and confidence among its customers and the general population. The company has a database of 250 customers (shops, restaurants, hotels and snack bars) and RTMC also sells to the general public.
